How does craniosacral therapy work ?

The craniosacral system

The brain and spinal cord are continuously bathed in a nurturing fluid called cerebral spinal fluid which is produced and absorbed rhythmically - about every 6 seconds. This subtle rhythm can be felt throughout the body as bones and soft tissue react to it's influence in their own particular way. These movements are felt and interpreted during a CST treatment.

The soft touch approach of CST also means that restrictions in the joints, muscles and fascial tissues can also be perceived. Tissue definitely has a different "feel" to it, if it is under stress or tension.

I use all of this subtle body movement information as sign posts to the parts of the body that need attention. The exact point at which pain and/or discomfort is apparent may not necessarily be the best point to start treatment.

"CranioSacral" might seem to imply a kind of head treatment, and it is true that CST is very often focused around the head neck and back – they are, after all, the main centres of our nervous system. However, the therapy may be applied to any part of the body from, quite literally, head to toe; sprained ankles would be treated at the ankle with perhaps a look at the knee and hip which may have some subtle involvement. Perhaps a lower back pain may be related to a neck condition.

CranioSacral Therapy does not rely on treatment formulas, each client is always treated as a unique individual - not just a collection of symptoms. I like to re-examine each client afresh at the beginning of every treatment session.
